2 - Feb -2009 - Organizers for the 2014 Sochi Games are touting a new domestic sponsorship deal worth $260 million as the largest of its kind in Olympic history. The Rostelecom and MegaFon telecommunications companies became the first "Tier One" partners of the games and also pledged to invest about $200 million to develop the region's infrastructure, the Sochi 2014 Organizing Committee announced Saturday. Putin has promised to turn Sochi into a world-class winter sports center, giving assurances that the budget will not be cut. He said plans call for outlays of $3.2 billion this year and $3.6 billion in 2010. The deal comes as the Russian government seeks to assure the International Olympic Committee that the country's economic troubles won't jeopardize state funding for the event.

The AOC has forecast a shortfall in its budget for the 2012 London Olympics and 2014 Sochi Winter Games, with only 140.3 million dollars (88.6 million US) committed, well short of the 239.2 million dollars (151 million US), which it says it needs to maintain high performance standards.

With the rejection in December of the EBU bid for the rights of the 2014 Winter Olympics and the 2016 Summer Games, the IOC essentially said European rights will go to the highest bidder, public or private. The rights for the 2014 Sochi Olympics and the 2016 Games, the host of which will be decided in October, have already gone to pay TV channels in some countries, with Sky Italia snapping up the rights for Italy and Fox Turkey for Turkey in separate deals.
